OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence of alterations in acoustic glottic source measures and vocal self-assessment scores in a sample of Brazilian female teachers, considering age group.
METHODS: Cross-sectional and retrospective study including database records of 221 female teachers. Data collected included: anamnesis, hearing screening, acoustic glottal source vocal measures, the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS), and the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Variables were dichotomously classified according to the normative criteria of each variable. Prevalence was estimated for each individual and aggregate outcome, with respective 95% confidence intervals calculated using the Wilson method.
RESULTS: All VHI domains showed prevalence above 50% and all VoiSS domains showed prevalence above 80%. Among the acoustic parameters, prevalence above 50% was found for: STD, SPI, and VTI; prevalence above 70% for: sPPQ, vfo, ShdB, and vAm; prevalence above 80% for: RAP, Jitt, Jita, and PPQ; and prevalence above 90% for: fhi, flo, Shim, APQ, sAPQ, and NHR.
CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of voice disorders in this sample of Brazilian female teachers was observed in both self-assessment measures and acoustic parameters, regardless of age. This suggests significant vocal deviation in this group of teachers and the need for actions aimed at vocal health.
