The accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of sports-related concussions in children and adolescents are high priorities for healthcare providers. Sports-related concussion remains a clinical diagnosis. In the acute setting, sideline tools such as the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 5/Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 6 are most valuable, and in the clinical setting, these assessment tools can serve as adjuncts to a comprehensive history and physical examination, including vestibular ocular motor screening. Management includes brief relative rest followed by an individualized approach for return to school and sport that is largely dependent on symptoms. Recovery also should be supported by good sleep, hydration, and nutrition. For patients with prolonged symptoms persisting beyond 30 days, a multidisciplinary, targeted approach to address underlying factors contributes to prolonged recovery.
