OBJECTIVES: To cross-culturally adapt the 18-item Children's Voice Questionnaire (CVQ) into Turkish and evaluate its measurement properties in Turkish-speaking children with and without dysphonia. A secondary aim was to examine the predefined 10-item short form (CVQ-10-TR) as an embedded score.
METHODS: The adaptation included forward-back translation, multidisciplinary expert review (n = 8), and cognitive debriefing with 15 children. The psychometric sample comprised 180 children (60 with dysphonia, 120 controls). Ordinal confirmatory factor analysis assessed structural validity. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, measurement error, construct validity, informant-specific associations, and known-groups validity were evaluated. Test-retest analyses included 50 clinically stable participants.
RESULTS: Content validity was high (overall S-CVI/Ave = 0.955). The CVQ-TR supported an admissible one-factor model (robust CFI = 0.964, TLI = 0.959, RMSEA = 0.057, SRMR = 0.051), whereas the three-factor model was inadmissible because latent correlations approached or exceeded unity. Internal consistency was high (ω = 0.952), and test-retest reliability was good (ICC = 0.892). All prespecified construct-validity hypotheses were confirmed. Children with dysphonia had substantially higher scores than controls (Hedges' g = 1.75). The embedded CVQ-10-TR showed a coherent one-factor solution, high internal consistency (ω = 0.944), good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.896), and very high correspondence with the full form (ρ = 0.971), with closely preserved external-association patterns.
CONCLUSIONS: The CVQ-TR is a valid, reliable, predominantly unidimensional measure of child-perceived voice handicap in Turkish-speaking children. The embedded CVQ-10-TR showed promising psychometric performance, but standalone administration requires independent validation.
